Native American Activist Frank LaMere Dies at 69

A crusader for Native American causes in Nebraska has died. Frank LeMere was 69. His son reports LeMere had been battling cancer.

LaMere was nationally known for battling the closure of four liquor stores in Whiteclay next to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. The stores closed in 2017.

LaMere was also involved in the Zachary Bear Heels case in Omaha. Bear Heels was a Native American who died in 2017 after an encounter with Omaha police. He had been tased a number of times and hit by officers during an arrest.

LeMere also served on the Democratic National Committee from 1996 to 2009 and was a delegate for several party conventions. He was also a member of the American Indian Movement.
