Omaha moves to tear down largest public housing complex

OMAHA, Neb. - The City of Omaha is looking to transform the southern part of the city, which means the largest public housing complex in the area could be a thing of the past down the road.

The city and the housing authority are thinking about tearing down Southside Terrace Apartments.

"“We’re looking at needs associated with housing and schools, and community, and work space, and transportation and everything that’s needed in a similar way to what’s happened in the Spencer Homes area,” said Joanie Poore with the Omaha Housing Authority.

The city used a $28 million dollar grant to bring down Spencer Homes in North Omaha and the same thing could happen to Southside Terrace Apartments.

Some residents of the complex would also like to see change.

“They’ve had these apartments for way too long. I think it’s time for a change to make these apartments look better,” said Darla Clendelen, a resident of Southside Terrace.

6 News reports Omaha is waiting on a decision from HUD on a $1.3 million grant to redevelop the area, which would include the demolition, but officials say they're still years away from starting the project.
