Omaha survey shows high interest in active commuting

OMAHA, Neb. - Do more people in the Omaha Metro area have an interest in not having to use a car to get around?

According to a new survey by the Verdis Group, that answer is yes.

"Quite honestly we weren't surprised that there was a lot of interest, we were surprised that there was so much interest," said Craig Moody with Verdis Group.

Moody tells KFAB Radio News Millenials showed the highest interest in active commuting of all demographics included in the survey.

"When it came to walking Millenials were three times more likely to express a high likelihood of actually walking as a commute choice. So Millenials, above and beyond everyone else, expressed extraordinarily high interest in active commuting."

Moody says a shift in transportation choices beyond automobiles could save $1.9 million per year in parking expense. It could also open up thousands of parking spaces, which could attract more people to the Midtown and Downtown parts of Omaha.
