Daylong Norfolk police standoff ends with 1 dead, 1 critical

OMAHA, Nebraska - A police standoff in Norfolk started Sunday morning around 9:30 when a man who'd been shot showed up at the police station. He was taken to a local hospital, and police went to a house in the downtown area, where they say a man had barricaded himself inside.

Police say talks with the suspect, 47-year-old Cory Dittman of Norfolk failed to progress, and around 6:00 p.m. officers shot tear gas into the house, 20 rounds of tear gas according to News Channel Nebraska.

The standoff ended around midnight when officers found Dittman's body inside the house, in an upstairs room. Police say he had a single, self-inflicted gunshot to the head, and was dead at the scene.

The victim of the initial shooting is in critical but stable condition.

The Nebraska State Patrol is leading the investigation and, as per state law, a grand jury will review the incident.
