Omaha City Council Rejects Mayor's Pick For Trash Hauler

It is back to square one for the City of Omaha when it comes to selecting a new trash hauler. Waste Management's contract expires in 2021. Mayor Jean Stothert says they have spent three years researching companies and she recommended FCC, an international company to provide serve for the next ten years.

The City Council rejected her selection at Tuesday's meeting. Concerns range from the number of bins allowed for homes, yard waste disposal and the price tag. Another company, West Central Sanitation from Minnesota also bid on the contract. Mayor Stothert is concerned they are too small to handle the job. A representative from that company was at the meeting on Tuesday and said they had proven they would be able to handle the task.

The next move apparently is up to the City Council. Mayor Stothert says they now have to decide what they want in the next contract with a waste collector but she will not go along with an increase in taxes to pay for it.
