Bennington city officials will hold an emergency closed door meeting tonight to decide what to do about their police officer situation - or rather lack thereof.
Chief Less Johnson died suddenly last August. Interim Chief Timm Pittman resigned last Monday night stating his last day would be May 31st.
Pittman tells 6 News, "When I got home I received a phone call from another officer saying that he had been instructed by the mayor for me to come in and turn my badge in that night. I was effectively done at that point. No other reason was given other than that's how they handle it in the corporate world."
The department currently has seven part-time officers.
Bennington Mayor Matt John says the Douglas County Sheriff's Office will give extra attention to the community and provide patrols.
John says there are options. The community could search for a new chief and add an officer to increase the staff from two to three full-timers.
More information will be available after Monday night's meeting.
