A Douglas County jury has convicted Marcus Wheeler for the shooting death of a 21 year old woman last April. Wheeler was found guilty Monday morning of both 2nd-degree murder and using a weapon to commit a felony.
Last April Kayviaun Nelson was shot sitting in her vehicle in the parking lot of the Irvington Walmart at 99th Street and Blair High Road. Nelson’s infant child was in the vehicle at the time but was not hurt.
Public Defender Jessica West told the jury that the shooting was in self-defense, that Wheeler fired to protect himself after losing a fight with one of Kayviaun Nelson’s friends.
