A California man who authorities say was high on drugs is behind bars following a pursuit on Interstate 80 early Saturday morning.
Around 12:40 a.m. a trooper spotted a Ford Mustang traveling at just four miles per hour on I-80 near Kearney. As the trooper tried to make a traffic stop, the Mustang driver showed no response and continued driving slowly. Moments later, the vehicle accelerated to approximately 70 miles per hour. The trooper initiated a pursuit.
The Mustang began driving recklessly, passed vehicles on the shoulder, and reached speeds up to 147 miles per hour. At one point the driver brought the car to a stop. As troopers approached the vehicle, the driver accelerated rapidly and troopers continued the chase.
Additional troopers were called in and were able to successfully deploy spike strips and bring the Mustang to a stop near Wood River. 37 year old Jonathan Suckow of Lomita, California was arrested for driving under the influence of drugs, willful reckless driving, and felony flight to avoid arrest.
The entire pursuit lasted nearly 22 minutes.
