Sheriff's Deputy Shoots, Kills Suspect Inside Church

A man is dead following a deputy-involved shooting at a Catholic church in northwest Nebraska. Investigators say a Sheridan County deputy shot 32-year-old Clarence Leading Fighter during a Palm Sunday service at the Immaculate Conception Church in Rushville.

The Nebraska State Patrol says it all began around 10:20 a.m. when Sheridan County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to reports of an assault in Rushville. When they arrived at the house, deputies found a victim with a broken arm.

About a half hour later Leading Fighter was located inside the church. The patrol says an incident occurred and Leading Fighter was shot by a deputy and died from his injuries.

While specific details about the incident are not yet available, the initial investigation indicates the deputy used deadly force to protect himself and the parishioners from potential serious harm. Nebraska State Law requires a grand jury to be called.
