Firefighters Battle Flames In Knee-Deep Mud

Omaha firefighters had quite a battle on their hands Sunday night when they responded to a fire at the old Sandpiper Cove Marina building on Freedom Park Road.

The long abandoned, flood damaged building began burning around 6:20 p.m after someone reported a brush fire in the area. .

Battalion Chief Scott Fitzpatrick says the building had been vacant since the 2011 flood and had been flooded several times in recent years. He says firefighters found themselves in knee-deep mud as they worked to put the flames out. Part of the building collapsed during the hour long fire fight.

All of the firefighters had to have their bunker gear decontaminated after the blaze. There were no injuries.
