A Sarpy County man convicted of first-degree murder died Tuesday at a hospital after an apparent suicide attempt at the Lincoln Correctional Center. 46 year old Steven Braesch was serving a life sentence after being convicted of first degree murder, use of a firearm to commit a felony and several counts of negligent child abuse after shooting his father in July of 2013 in Gretna.
Braesch killed his father, Bill Braesch after he was told to move out of the family home. His mother and an eight year old niece watched it happen through a glass door.
Officials said Braesch was found unresponsive in his cell just before 9:30 a.m. Tuesday. Staff members tried CPR and he was transported to the hospital by first responders where he was pronounced dead.
Braesch began serving his sentence on Nov. 17, 2014. The Nebraska State Patrol is investigating the death and since it was an in-custody death a grand jury will also conduct an investigation.
