Man Recovering After Tuesday Night Shooting

An Omaha man is recovering after being shot Tuesday night.

Omaha Police say officers were called to a home near 42nd and Miami streets just after 8:00 Tuesday to investigate a report of a shooting. Witnesses at the scene told officers that a man had shot himself and then fled in a vehicle. Officers located the victim, 25 year old Kevontae Richards, at 40th and Lake and transported him to Nebraska Medicine with a non-life threatening injury.

Investigators determined that Richards had not shot himself. Instead, he had gone to the home on Miami to confront 50 year old William Harris. During the disturbance, Harris shot through the front door of residence, striking Richards, who was standing outside. Harris then fled the scene.

Officers following up at the residence spoke with resident 48 year old Buffie Kackley-Harris, who was present during the shooting. While conducting this follow up, officers located methamphetamine in the residence and arrested Kackley-Harris for Possession of Meth with Intent to Deliver.

Officers eventually located Harris near 44th Ave and Evans where he was arrested and found to be in possession of a firearm. Harris was interviewed, and then booked for Second Degree Felony Assault, Use of a Weapon to Commit a Felony, Possession of a Firearm by a Prohibited Person and Tampering with Evidence.
