Sheriff's Deputy Recovering After Being Hit By Semi

A Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s deputy suffered a leg injury and is recovering after he was hit by a semi during a traffic stop Saturday morning. The sheriff's department says Deputy Adam Fields had stopped a vehicle on Interstate 29 just south of Council Bluffs around 4 a.m.

As Deputy Fields was about to speak with the driver, a Fed Ex semi hit his patrol car on the driver’s side. Deputy Fields was then hit while standing at the window of the vehicle he had just pulled over.

The semi swerved into the median, went through the cable safety barrier, went across the southbound lanes of I-29 and ended up in a ditch to the west. Fields radioed for help and reported he was hit. Deputy Fields was taken to the hospital for a leg injury and was released.

The driver of the semi was not injured, but was cited for failure to maintain control of his vehicle. He was also taken out of service for being a fatigued driver. The passengers in the vehicle Deputy Fields stopped were not harmed, but the driver of the vehicle was arrested for operating while intoxicated.
