Child Killed, Seven Others Injured In Iowa Crash

A nine year old Grand Island boy was killed and seven other people injured in a one vehicle crash on I-80 near Atlantic, Iowa Sunday night.

The Iowa State Patrol reports says a 2004 GMC driven by a 40-year-old man was traveling west on I-80 at around 10:30 p.m. near the Marne exit, when the vehicle went out of control due to freezing rain conditions. 

The vehicle went into a ditch and rolled onto its passenger side. Nine-year-old Joshua Tavares, who was not wearing a seat belt, died at the scene.  The driver, 40 year old Jesus Cantero-Perez, and his passengers were all injured in the crash. 

The passengers injured are identified as:

  • Wendy Tavares, 35
  • Ashley Tavares, 11
  • Kimberly Tavares, 12
  • Yamilet Cantero, 11
  • Jonathan Tavares, 15
  • Emanual Cantero, 10

All seven of the injured were taken to Cass County Memorial Hospital.  Four of the injured children were not wearing seat belts according to the Iowa State Patrol.  Both adults were buckled-up.
