Juvenile Detention Center Bond Issue Rejected

The Omaha Douglas County Building Commission voted to reject a proposed $120 million bond issue for a courthouse annex and a juvenile detention center after four hours of debate on Thursday

The proposal failed on a 3-2 vote. The Douglas County Board of Commissioners voted in mid-January on a resolution to ask the Building Commission to issue $120 million in revenue bonds to fund the justice center project

Supporters wanted to replace the current detention center. Opponents said the plan wasn't a good solution.

The measure passed 6-1 setting up Thursday consideration by the Building Commission.  The project could come back to the Douglas County Board and then could later return to the Building Commission.
