Lincoln Officer, Suspect Remain Hospitalized After Shooting

New details have been released in an officer involved shooting in Lincoln on Saturday that injured an officer and a suspect police were trying to arrest.

Lincoln Police say an officer was accidentally shot and injured by another officer during a confrontation with a man inside an apartment.  The injured officer and the suspect are still in the hospital recovering.

The incident took place on December 29 around 2:40 a.m. in the 3200 Block of South 48th Street. Lincoln Police Chief Jeff Bliemeister said officers Kyle Russell and Josh Atkinson were both injured in the incident.

The 25 year old Russell, who has been on the force for 2 years, suffered a stab wound to the chest and was released from the hospital on Sunday.

Atkinson, who is 36 and an officer for more than 10 years, was shot in the leg.  He had surgery on Saturday and remains hospitalized.

The suspect, 43 year old Christopher Brennauer, was shot in the shoulder and was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

Lancaster County Sheriff’s investigators say that Officer Russell was stabbed by Brennauer during a struggle inside an apartment. During the struggle with Brennauer, Russell fired his weapon, striking the suspect and Officer Atkinson.

Russell’s firearm was the only weapon fired.
