A South High Magnet student was arrested Tuesday for carrying a handgun to school. An email that went out to families of students said that a student reported that another student may have had a weapon on the school campus.
Police were called and found the student off campus. The 15-year-old was arrested and is booked at the Douglas County Youth Center. The teen is charged with carrying a concealed weapon, possession of an unregistered firearm, possession of a firearm on school grounds and possession of a handgun by a person under 18 years old.
"We take these situations very seriously and the appropriate disciplinary action will be taken. We are working with our District Safety Office, our on-site security team and the Omaha Police Department to ensure the safety of our school environment.," Principal Ruben Cano said in the email.
The school also commended the student who brought the information forward. Here is the full email that was sent out.
"Good Afternoon South High Magnet Staff and Families: "We wanted to make you aware of a situation that occurred at South High Magnet today. This morning, a student reported that another student may have a weapon on campus. We immediately contacted the police and they investigated the situation. The suspected student was located off campus and detained for possession of a weapon. We continue to cooperate with Omaha Police Department in their ongoing investigation.
