A number of Nebraska law enforcement agencies are going "pink" in October. This is the second year for the Pink Patch Program in Nebraska.
The idea came from California, and La Vista Police Chief Bob Lausten quickly adopted the idea for his department last year with seven other agencies jumping on board.
This year's efforts have more than doubled, with 16 agencies now joining the cause, including the Omaha Police Department.
Each agency chooses their benefactor. La Vista supports Scare Away Cancer. Sarpy County supports A Leap For a Cure.
Omaha Police Captain Laurie Scott said OPD is going with one that hits closer to home. "We chose the Hereditary Cancer Foundation, which is kind of near and dear to Omaha's heart. Former Omaha police officer Kammie Preston, her daughter runs the foundation. The foundation was named after her. She lost her life in her early 40's to breast cancer," Scott says.
The patches and t-shirts other items can be purchased online or at 11 metro area Hy-Vee stores. Money raised will benefit all three causes. The goal is to raise money and awareness for breast cancer.
The program runs through the end of October.
