Omaha Police Gang Officer Shot During Traffic Stop

Omaha Police say a gang unit officer was shot in the line of duty just before 4:00 Tuesday afternoon.   Deputy Chief Scott Gray says a help an officer call was made after a traffic stop at 30th and Laurel.

"At which time the passenger from the vehicle fled and fired shots at the officers.  The officers returned fire striking the passenger," Gray says.  He says an officer was also struck by gunfire. He reportedly suffered a wound to the shoulder.   

He and the gunman were taken to UNMC for treatment and are in stable condition.  The driver of the vehicle stopped was taken into custody and was uninjured. No names have been released yet and police blocked off a large area along 30th Street near Miller Park.
