It's take two for the Huskers' season opener on Saturday as Nebraska faces former Big 12 rival Colorado. The scheduled opener against Akron last week lasted through the opening kickoff when the game was delayed and eventually canceled by a lightning-packed storm.
Nebraska and Colorado were conference rivals for more than 60 years in the Big Seven, Big Eight and Big 12 Conferences, before Nebraska moved to the Big Ten and Colorado to the Pac-12. Saturday's meeting is the first of four match-ups between the two schools scheduled between 2018 and 2024.
Colorado stands at 1-0 after an impressive season-opening victory over in-state rival Colorado State on Friday in Denver. The Buffs opened a two-touchdown lead midway through the first quarter and never looked back on their way to a 45-13 win. CU showed an explosive offense, with 596 yards, including 338 yards through the air and 258 rushing yards.
Earlier this week, Husker head coach Scott Frost said Colorado looked good in their season opener. “They really won that game decisively against an in-state rival, I think they’re coached very well. You don’t see them out of position ever. They got a middle linebacker that made a bunch of plays, some really good guys in the secondary; some good guys up front. I think schematically they do some really good things on offense. Had two receivers that played really well and a quarterback that had great numbers. So, they get the benefit of having that game under their belt and we don’t, but I know our guys are preparing hard and going to be ready and we’re going to do the best we can.”
Saturday's matchup between Nebraska and Colorado will mark the 70th all-time meeting between the long-time conference rivals. Nebraska and Colorado last met in 2010, in the final Big 12 Conference game for both schools.
Kickoff is at 2:30 PM on ABC.
