The Huskers back-up quarterback has left the university just days before the season opener against Akron.
On Tuesday, Nebraska Head Coach Scott Frost confirmed that quarterback Tristan Gebbia asked for and received a release from Nebraska. Gebbia had been battling to be the Huskers starting quarterback for the upcoming season, but true freshman Adrian Martinez was named the starter over the weekend.
Frost said initially Gebbia took the news well when he was told on Saturday, but by Monday the redshirt Freshman was not practicing with the team. “We want guys who want to be here. Tristan’s a great kid. There have been several players who have chosen not to be a part of the program, and some of the decisions I agreed with, some of them I didn’t. No matter what, these are good kids, and we want what’s best for them.”
True freshman starting quarterback Adrian Martinez now has sophomore walk-on Andrew Bunch and fellow true freshman, and walk-on, Matt Masker to back him up at QB.
