Bellevue Fire Department Gets Additional Money

With the threat of firefighter layoffs and decreased response times, The Bellevue City Council is giving the fire department more money.

The city heard from citizens during Monday night's meeting and many voiced support of the fire department and keeping public safety a priority.   Though there were no cuts proposed, the fire department is not fully funded, which would require cuts in staffing.

The council moved on Monday to increase revenues and cash reserves, adding about $761,000 to the department.   The vote came at the end of a four hour meeting.   The city will take money from other parts of the budget and give it to the fire department to get it almost fully funded.  There will be no property tax increase to pay for it.

The three areas where money is being taken will be bonded out to the public.  Council members said they want to move toward finding a revenue source for the department.  One option being considered for is a restaurant tax.
