Nebraska Lawmakers Reflect On The Life Of Senator John McCain

Nebraska lawmakers are paying tribute to Arizona Senator John McCain who passed away after a long battle with brain cancer.

Nebraska Governor Pete Ricketts issued this statement on Monday:

“Our country has lost a great patriot who dedicated his life to serving our country in our military and then in the U.S. Senate.  Our prayers and condolences are with the McCain family.”

Fellow Senators Deb Fischer and Ben Sasse spoke of McCain's leadership and service to his country.

“With a heavy heart we mourn the loss of a national treasure, Senator John McCain. From his days as a war hero, to his leadership on the Senate Armed Services Committee, and his years of dedicated service to the people of Arizona, Senator McCain’s indomitable spirit and love for country had no match. My deepest sympathies go out to Cindy and the entire McCain family. ” - Deb Fischer

“Our nation aches for truth-tellers. This man will be greatly missed.” - Ben Sasse

Congressman Don Bacon honored McCain in a weekend series of tweets:

"Today, we lost an American hero. A man who suffered greatly while selflessly serving our country. Senator John McCain believed in the spirit of service and put his country before himself. From imprisonment in Vietnam during a time of turmoil in our country, to the freedom of speaking passionately on the Senate Floor, Sen. McCain rose above political affiliation to proudly fight for freedom and what was right. The man who proudly followed his father and grandfather into the U.S. Navy has physically left us after succumbing to a horrible disease, and I send my prayers to the family. I pray they are comforted knowing Sen. McCain made an impact on so many people and that he truly was an American hero. God speed."
