Nebraska State Fair Starts Today

Eleven days of fun starts today as the gates open to the 2018 Nebraska State Fair in Grand Island. Executive Director Lori Cox says they have been hard at work putting together a fantastic fair for all Nebraskans.

Cox says, "The number one reason that folks come to any fair across the country is the animals.  There are 9,000 critters coming to the Nebraska State Fair.  Everything from the equestrian side, the cattle side, sheep, pigs, ducks, chickens. You name it, we've got it.  Even some exotics at the petting zoo."

Cox says the number one attraction at the State Fair is the Birthing Pavilion.  There are four different species featured this year and nowhere else are you going to be able to experience baby animals being born.

This year's concert lineup includes Kelly Clarkson, Sugarland, Righteous Brothers and Bill Medley, Night Ranger, Old Dominion, Francesca Battistelli, and Night Ranger.  On the fairgrounds there are a number of other musical acts performing along with special entertainment that includes sharks, sea lions, pig races, trapeze artists, a strong woman and a trained dog show.

There is also plenty of thrills to enjoy at the midway carnival that features many rides for young and old.

Cox says you can't have a state fair without food.  New this year is grilled mac and cheese where you create your own pasta bowl.  Other favorites like the pineapple whip, mini donuts, corn dogs bbq, ice cream and food on a stick will make a return appearance.

The Nebraska State Fair runs through Labor Day, September 3rd.
