Environmental Group Wants To End Husker Balloon Release

A new billboard on Highway 2 in Lincoln is no doubt raising some eyebrows.  A Florida environmental group paid $3,500 to put the sign up in an effort to pull the plug on a long time Husker game day tradition.

Dannielle Vosburgh with the group Balloons Blow says their goal is to end UNL's school sanctioned mass littering events. "Balloon releases have no place in modern society," the group said in a Facebook post.

They are hoping that the decision by Clemson University to finally end their game day balloon releases will prompt Nebraska to follow suit.

"UNL is the last university in the United States holding onto this destructive, archaic tradition, regularly tossing thousands of latex deathtraps into the environment," the Facebook post said.  The group is concerned that animals will eat the balloons and die after they fall to the ground.

The billboard is up just in time for the Huskers 'Fan Day' this Saturday.  It will remain up for the first two home games.  University officials say they have no plans to end the tradition.  They say each balloon released is 100 percent latex biodegradable and they don't use plastic tabs to tie off the balloons.
