Man Arrested After Holding Frog Hostage In North Platte

A man is behind bars in North Platte after rolling his car, fleeing the scene and then holding a frog hostage.

The Lincoln County Sheriff's Office says that just after 1:00 Wednesday morning, a driver was in a single vehicle rollover crash near Hershey. The driver then got a ride and left the scene, contacting authorities while on the way to North Platte.

A deputy pulled the vehicle over shortly after near Leota and Jeffers in North Platte and located the man in the passenger seat. The man then got out of the vehicle and started yelling at the deputy. The man then proceeded to pick up a frog and offered it to the deputy. He then pulled the frog back towards him, taking back his offer to give it to the deputy, and yelled that he would be taking the frog as his hostage.

While yelling threats at the deputy, and still holding his "hostage," the man began throwing trash at a North Platte police officer who arrived on scene to help the deputy. The hostage-taker continued to fail to comply with prompts from the officers, which led to the deputy deploying his taser on the man.

The frog was let go, unharmed, and the man was taken to Great Plains Health under emergency protective custody.

Authorities say drugs and alcohol may have been factors in the incident.
