Man Falls In Storm Drain Trying To Rescue Kitten

A Good Samaritan trying to rescue a trapped kitten fell 25 feet into a storm drain near 14th and Douglas Wednesday morning.

A Nebraska Humane Society spokesperson says the man heard the crying kitten and removed a metal grate and attempted to lower himself down with a ladder.  Director of Field Operations Kelli Brown says the ladder was unstable and the man fell.

Rescue crews spent about 30 minutes carefully removing the man.  "We lifted him up flat because we don't want to make it so that he's in any worse pain if he has any back or neck injuries."  The man was brought up and put into an ambulance and taken to the hospital.

He is expected to be ok and Brannen says he is lucky.  "Very lucky that he didn't hit his head.  He may have ridden the ladder down."

The kitten was removed from the drain and is now in the care of the Nebraska Humane Society.
