A fire early Thursday morning has destroyed an Omaha home. It was reported around 4:30 a.m. near 31st and Curtis Avenue. When firefighters arrived there was smoke and flames coming from the windows.
Two people live in the house but were not home at the time. Battalion Chief Rob Gottsch says, "Crews made a pretty good initial attack to knock the flames down." Fire in the walls complicated getting it under control. "We believe it started on the first floor and then it got up into that second floor bedroom."
Two dogs were rescued from the home, but several turtles died in the fire. The Red Cross is now assisting the residents. The search for the cause of the fire continues.
