Immigration Issue To Be Placed On November Ballot In Scribner

A small eastern Nebraska town will undoubtedly draw attention in this year's midterm election for a controversial immigration ballot item.

On Monday, the Scribner council voted 4-0 to let residents decide by putting the proposed law on November's midterm ballot. The ordinance would ban those living in the U.S. illegally from renting homes or being employed in Scribner. This would be a similar ordinance to one that went in to effect in Fremont four years ago.

The area is preparing for workers to flock to nearby towns when Costco opens its new chicken processing plant in Fremont next year. The plant will employ about 1,000 employees and officials say new residents will likely fill at least half of those jobs. With laborers moving into the area, the face of Scribner's population of about 900 would drastically change as 96% of the current population is Caucasian.
