Speed Limits To Increase Thursday

Beginning Thursday a new law takes effect allowing higher speed limits on Nebraska state highways. The law signed by Gov. Pete Ricketts in the spring will raise the speed limit from 60 to 65 mph on four-lane highways.

Other expressways and freeways will see the limits increase to from 65 to 70 mph.  The change won't apply to Interstate 80.

Nebraska DOT Director Kyle Schnewies says 54 signs are being changed to reflect the new speed limits. Crews began switching the signs out earlier this week. They will remain covered until Thursday morning.

Schnewies says their studies show drivers are already driving those speeds to begin with.
