Nebraska Senators Meet Supreme Court Justice Nominee

Nebraska Senators Deb Fischer and Ben Sasse got the opportunity to meet with President Trump's Supreme Court Justice nominee Brett Kavanaugh.

Sasse landed at Eppley Airfield on Thursday night, just hours after meeting with Kavanaugh, and called their meeting productive.

Sasse says the two men spent an hour together, mostly speaking at length about the First Amendment. "The guy in person doesn't bear any of the resemblance to the caricature you hear screamed on social media. I think it will be hard for people to demonize him as some sort of ideologue. I think he's a humble man and clearly a brilliant jurist."

Opponents question whether Kavanaugh would put Roe v. Wade at risk, but Sasse didn't have that conversation with the nominee. "I didn't ask him any political or policy issues because that's not an appropriate question because that's not the role of a judge."

Senator Deb Fischer had this to say about her meeting with Kavanaugh.

“Judge Kavanaugh is an excellent choice for the Supreme Court. During our meeting today, I asked Judge Kavanaugh several questions about his record and his constitutional interpretation. I was impressed with his talented legal mind, judicial temperament, and commitment to the rule of law.”

Sasse said he believes confirmation will be a long and complicated process. Kavanaugh has written more than 300 opinions in the last decade, and those words will be analyzed to learn where he may rule on future cases. Hearings are set to begin in mid to late August.
