Building's Owner Says He'll Fight Eminent Domain Proceedings

An Omaha architect says he's going to file a lawsuit against Douglas County after a decision to take over his building through eminent domain.

The Douglas County Board of Commissioners voted 6-1 on Tuesday to initiate the eminent domain proceedings in an attempt to acquire the building at 18th and Howard. Now, the building’s owner Bob Perrin says he plans to fight the board’s decision. Perrin says the 98 year old structure is well-preserved and a big part of Omaha's history.

Perrin bought the building for close to $500,000, with the county offering him $900,000 for the building, but he says money isn’t the issue. He wants to save the historic building and has plans to renovate.

The architect's plan is to convert it into retail space and condos or apartments. The board's plan is to tear down the structure and build a juvenile justice center on the site. The justice center will also create office space for attorneys who now work in the overcrowded Douglas County courthouse.

Commissioner James Cavanaugh was the only ‘no’ vote for eminent domain.
