Dog Dies After Being Left In Car For Hours

A family's dog died over the weekend after being left in a vehicle for hours.

Nebraska Humane Society officials say the German shepherd was left in an SUV near 114th and Dodge for hours as its owner was inside a restaurant. The owner reportedly left the vehicle running, with the air conditioning on, but when they came out to check on the dog it was in distress.

The owner called for help, but it wasn't enough to save the dog's life. Humane Society officers determined that the owners did not intend to hurt the dog and that precautions were taken to try an keep it cool, so they were not fined.

NHS officials say this is a common thing for pet owners to do, but it's a tragic reminder that just because the air conditioner is on, it doesn't mean it's circulating enough to keep your pets safe.
