Preparations Underway For Memorial Park Concert

An Omaha summer tradition continues Friday night as Starship and Survivor headline the Metro Credit Union Celebrates America Concert.

Tens of thousands of people are expected to attend and many will start putting lawn chairs and blankets down at 5:00 Friday morning when the park opens. "If they do that they just have to remember not to put any stakes in the ground due to safety concerns," says Dustin West, Metro's Marketing and Public Relations Director.  Plastic tarps are also prohibited.

West says park preparations got underway Thursday morning.  "The stage is getting set up, all the porta potties are getting out. M.U.D. will bring out their hydration stations so that people can stay hydrated when they're out here tomorrow."

West says concert-goers can bring coolers and their own water.  They can refill their bottles at those watering stations.    Traffic will be an issue as select streets north of Memorial Park will be one-way Friday.

To ease traffic flow in the neighborhoods streets north of Underwood Avenue to Western Avenue from Happy Hollow Boulevard to 66th Street and streets from Western north to Hamilton Street from 54th to 58th streets will be one-way Friday between 8 a.m. and the end of the event.

Parking will be allowed only on the east side of area streets. This is a safety precaution to ensure that the city’s fire and rescue equipment can get through, if necessary.

On the south side of Dodge Street, there will be no parking on the east side of 53rd, 54th and 55th streets. There also will be no parking along Happy Hollow between Dodge and Underwood. East of Happy Hollow to 52nd Street, there will be no parking on the north or east side of the streets from Dodge to Underwood.

Carpooling to the concert is encouraged. UNO will allow concert goers to use its parking facilities. UNO’s regular lots and the multi-level parking garage will be available after 4 p.m. Friday. People parking at UNO should use the pedestrian overpass when they cross Dodge Street.

The concert runs from 6 to 10 p.m. and will be followed by a fireworks finale.  Omaha band the Confidentials will open the open the show followed by Survivor and Starship.
