Several Departments Respond To Large Barn Fire

A thick, black cloud of smoke towered into the air in Sarpy County Saturday evening as several fire stations responded to a barn fire on 60th St. near Highway 370.

Large flames were coming from the barn as fire crews arrived. The fire was contained rather quickly.  Sarpy County authorities said no one was injured in the fire.

One witness told 6 News that he stepped out of his home across the highway to see a giant plume of smoke and flames. He said the fire started at the middle building on the property and spread,  damaging four other surrounding buildings. The middle building was completely destroyed.

"It was as thick and wide as the building was and it was just, I mean, it was producing all kinds of smoke and it was going straight up into the sky and, I mean, it was just the biggest plume of smoke I had seen in a long time," said John Palenski.

The smoke was visible for several miles and drew the curiosity of fans attending the Omaha Storm Chasers game.
