Former Creighton Student Sentenced For Slashing Woman's Neck

A former Creighton University student who says he was hazed before slashing a classmate's neck is headed to jail.

On Wednesday, Christopher Wheeler was sentenced to 30 days in jail and five years probation for the cutting. Wheeler had pleaded no contest to the charges in April as part of a plea deal. In exchange, a charge of Use of a Weapon to Commit a Felony was dropped.

The incident happened on Creighton campus in February, 2017 when Wheeler entered the dorm room of the 19-year-old victim and cut her throat with a knife. The wound was not serious but did cause scarring.

Wheeler claimed that his fraternity had hazed him so badly, that he unwillingly cut the victim. Wheeler said he was forced to drink alcohol and smoke marijuana, but judge Shelly Stratman would not allow that defense. "You should never drink alcohol again. You should never smoke pot again. That is the least you could do."

Wheeler could have faced up to 20 years behind bars.
