The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for Nebraska through Sunday evening. The Douglas County Heath Department want s everyone to plan ahead to avoid heat related illness.
A recent CDC study shows that extreme heat is responsible for more than 650 deaths on average per year in the United States making it the Nation's biggest weather killer.
"People in Nebraska look forward to spending time outdoor," Health Director Dr. Adi Pour said. "However, this heat can runin the fun if you are not ready."
The Douglas County Health Department has some basic suggestions to avoid heat related problems. They include:
Never leave a person or animal in a closed, parked vehicle.
Drink plenty of fluids before you get thirsty and avoid drinks with alcohol or caffeine. Water is the best drink.
As much as possible, take advantage of air conditioning.
Wear light colored, loose fitting clothing.
outdoor activity should be limited to the cooler morning and evening hours.
Athletes participating in outdoor activities need special attention and lots of fluids.
Those 65 years of age and older are more at risk as are children. You can help by checking on those individuals during the day.
Use a sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher when outdoors
Dr. Pour says, "Heat related injures can be prevent. Stay cool, stay hydrated and stay informed."
