OPS Board Approves $29 Million In Budget Cuts

The Omaha Public School Board unanimously Monday night voted to cut nearly 29 million dollars from its budget for the upcoming school year.

Nearly 21 million dollars will be cut from the central office, including 32 jobs. The district's human relations department is trying to find them other jobs in the district.

Eighteen administrators will go back to teaching in classrooms and 131 vacant positions will not be filled. That figure also includes holding off on buying new textbooks.

Superintendent Mark Evans recognizes it's a tough decision but one that has to be made.  "No one wants to be here and clearly I understand the impact. I think the school board does too on individuals lives and we've all had calls, we've all been in meetings, we've all had that opportunity to see that impact the reductions have so I think everyone's taking it very seriously," Evans said.
