One Dead, Six Wounded In Old Market Shooting

Omaha Police say a 20 year old woman was killed and six others were injured after a shooting in the Old Market late Saturday night.

Omaha police say Jasmine Harris died at the hospital from her injuries.   Six other victims were all treated for non-life threatening injuries at area hospitals. They were identified as the following:

  • Dewayne Staley Jr., 28
  • Makye Thomas, 15
  • Gregory Austin, 19, possible non-gun related injury
  • Kristen Prater, 16
  • Velia Vasquez,18
  • Robert McGhee-Gould, 20

Police said the shooting began as an altercation in the Old Market area and the shots fired call came in around 11:45 p.m.    Investigators believe the shooting may be gang related from incidents that happened last month.

Acting Deputy Chief of the Uniform Patrol Bureau, Tom Shaffer, said "Due to the nature of this and the multiple victims, Chief (Todd) Schmaderer was at the scene as well as Captain (Ken) Kanger, the head of our gang unit and the Omaha Police Department is taking this very seriously, obviously with the Old Market and the high-traffic area down here."

So far there are no reports of any arrests. Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact the OPD Homicide Unit at 402 444-5656 or Omaha Crime Stoppers at 402 444-STOP.
