In the wake of Saturday night's shooting near 11th and Farnam that killed a woman and injured six others, officials with the Downtown Improvement District say they will be meeting this week to discuss possible solutions to the gun violence.
"Last night our close-knit Downtown community suffered a terrible tragedy," officials said in a statement. "Our hearts go out to the families of everyone involved. This kind of mindless violence is becoming more and more prevalent in our society and it’s time for us come together as a community to seek solutions."
District representatives will be hosting a public meeting this week to discuss potential community solutions, such as an underage curfew, improved lighting and security in our public spaces, and activation of trouble areas."
Members of the community, OPD and elected officials will be asked to come together and talk about ways to prevent similar tragedies in the future. The specific time and location for the meeting have not been set yet.
"Downtown Omaha is a beautiful, thriving, and safe place. Unfortunately, when something like this happens, it’s easy to forget the peace of every other day. With a full summer of amazing events ahead of us, let’s not forget that living life to the fullest is the greatest revenge on those who seek to destroy it."
