Former Douglas County Election Commissioner Found Dead

Former Election Commissioner Dave Phipps has died.  His body was found in his Omaha home on Wednesday.  Authorities say it appeared he had been deceased for some time and that no foul play is suspected.

Phipps served as Election Commissioner for ten years, taking office in 2005.  Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts decided to replace him at the end of Phipps' term in 2015.

The governor appointed Brian Kruse, the current election commissioner, to assume the duties of the office at that time.

"Dave was a good guy.  He was very cordial and a consummate professional when I came into the office and helped me with the transition," Kruse says.

"Our office extends our sympathies and thoughts to his family and friends and for his ten years of service to the Douglas County voters we thank Dave."

Kruse says he first met Phipps when the two went to Wayne State College.
