Two Students Injured In Chemical Explosion At UNL

Two University of Nebraska-Lincoln students are recovering after being injured in a chemical explosion on Thursday.

The two male students, ages 22 and 19, were hospitalized with non life-threatening injuries after the lab explosion. One of the students was released from the hospital Thursday evening, with the other staying hospitalized overnight. One of the students suffered cuts to his face with the other sustaining inhalation burns.

Authorities say a container holding nitric acid and other chemicals burst inside the lab in Theodore Jorgensen Hall, home to the school's physics and astronomy department. University Police say it is not clear at this time what caused the bottle to rupture.

Firefighters say the entire hall was evacuated as a precaution, but that the danger was contained to the lab. An evacuation order was lifted for Jorgensen Hall around 7:00 Thursday night.

No other injuries were reported and the incident remains under investigation.
