A man shot by Omaha Police on Saturday is now out of the hospital and in Douglas County Jail.
Police officials say 26 year old Jacob Osbon was released from the hospital on Tuesday and taken to the jail. Osbon is facing a laundry list of charges stemming from Saturday's incident. He was booked for Possession of a Stolen Vehicle, two counts of Felony Criminal Mischief, two counts Felony in Possession of a Firearm, Possession of a Defaced Firearm, Possession of a Short Rifle, Possession of an Unregistered Firearm and Possession of Burglar Tools.
Police have released a thorough account of the Saturday evening incident in which three people were injured.
The incident evolved after police got information about an imminent robbery. Just before 6:00, Douglas County 911 got a call from an anonymous party. The caller told the dispatcher that two men in a stolen Dodge Durango were armed and planning to rob the GI Forum near 20th and N streets.
Omaha Police officers Jacob Chong and Anthony White responded to the call with Gang Unit officers Mathew Stigge and Robert Wiley on hand to assist.
Police say that within minutes, officers announced over the radio that the suspect was ramming their cruisers and shots were fired by officers on scene. Three people were transported to the hospital. Officers reported that one person had been hit by gunfire and the other two suffered injuries from flying debris.
All four officers at the scene were wearing body cameras and both cruisers had video cameras that captured the event.
Police offered the following reconstruction of events based on the 911 audio, review of the video footage, and witness statements.
- At 6:00, officers observed a silver Dodge Durango in the 5200 block of S. 19th Street. It matched the description, including the license plate number supplied by the 911 caller. The location was within blocks of the GI Forum.
- The officers pulled into the driveway and all four officers got out. Investigators say the officers can be heard on the recordings giving loud verbal commands to the driver to stop.
- In what appeared to be an effort to get away, the suspect driver is heard and seen revving his engine as he backed into the two marked cruisers. The suspect pulled forward and reversed again, hitting the two marked cruisers a second time. The collisions caused significant damage to all three vehicles.
- Officer Chong and Officer Stigge fired their duty weapons. The suspect vehicle stopped and the driver and two passengers were handcuffed without further incident.
- The officers called for Omaha Fire Department medics who transported all three parties to the hospital for treatment of various injuries.
The Durango was found to have been stolen from Omaha earlier that day. The four officers have been placed on administrative duty as per department policy while authorities investigate. There are currently no charges against the two passengers.
The investigation is ongoing.
