The City of LaVista is getting a jump on summer. A Salute to Summer festival will get underway Thursday and continue through Sunday.
The festival will begin Thursday evening with a Hometown Heroes Event. "We celebrate Memorial Day for a reason and that's for the men and women in the military who have made that ultimate sacrifice, so that Hometown Heroes event is our ceremony to do that," says spokesman Mitch Beaumont.
It will start at 6:00 at the Blue Star Memorial in the southeast corner of the City Hall parking lot. The event will include a police and fire honor guard, a speaker from Offutt Air Force Base, patriotic music from students from Papillion-La Vista High School and ROTC demonstration from Papillion-La Vista South High School.
The annual community cookout will be held Friday in the City Hall parking lot at 81st and Parkview Blvd. Free hot dogs, hamburgers, chips and drinks will be served beginning at 6 p.m., while supplies last. Those who attend are asked to bring a non-perishable food item for the Tri-City Food Pantry and a lawn chair for watching the concert and fireworks.
There will also be a number of family activities Friday evening, including games, climbing wall, bounce houses and a concert by the band “Velvet Crush” from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. There will also be a car show in the La Vista Keno parking lot and is open to all makes, models and classes.
A fireworks display at the former LaVista golf course will light up the sky at dusk. A parade will be the highlight of the day Saturday at 1:00 p.m. It will runs along Parkview Blvd from 87th to 75th Street.
The festival will close with the Family Pool Party Sunday from 1-4 p.m., at the La Vista Municipal Pool.
