A number of Omaha restaurants, bars and business kitchens will be shut down Thursday after failing to pay their food and drink permit fees.
All twelve businesses scheduled to close were sent invoices in November and were informed at that time that payment was due by December 31st. A one-week grace period was provided in January to help businesses comply, due to the busy holiday season.
The businesses scheduled to close have been sent letters informing them they are late and are subject to a late fee. Each business was also contacted by their inspector to remind them that their fees have not been paid.
The final dozen businesses, out of nearly 3,000 permitted operations in Douglas County, will be closed and required to pay their permit fee, a late fee, and a re-inspection fee as they must undergo an inspection before they are allowed to reopen. The Douglas County Health Department says those found to be operating without a permit could be subject to a fine and jail time, or both, for each offense.
Permit fees are used to pay the costs of health inspectors who make sure the food served is safe for the public, which the Health Department says can only be done if businesses that serve food and drinks are inspected regularly.
