Morel Mushroom Season In Full Swing

It's that time of the Spring when mushroom hunters hit the fields.

The heavy rain we received earlier this week and this weekends warmer weather will created ideal conditions for mushroom hunters heading to the fields. Greg Wagner with Nebraska Game and Parks tells NewsRadio 1110 KFAB those looking to cash in on the tasty fungi are in luck. "Folks are now finding the small grays and little yellows in river bottom woods near dead, hardwood trees. The spongy mushrooms emerge for only a few weeks every spring, so now is the time to hunt for them.

Wagner says the mushrooms are so popular, because they make for a tasty spring treat. "The earthy, nutty, great tasting hollow sponge on a hollow stem is fantastic." If you are planning on going on a mushroom hunt though, Wagner says make sure you get permission. "97% of Nebraska is private. That's where some of our premiere hunting takes place. Ask the farmer first. You must get permission from the landowner whether that land is posted (as private land) or not."

Mushroom picking is permitted on all state Game and Parks property.
