Pottawattamie County Attorney Matt Wilber says he won't file charges against a Council Bluffs officer who shot a suspect during a pursuit early Tuesday morning.
28 year old Clifton Wade was shot three times by Officer Jason Burleigh, who fired nine rounds total. Wade was shot in the arm and sustained cuts to his face. He has since undergone three surgeries. He is expected to make a full recovery.
At 3 a.m. on Tuesday, Council Bluffs Police tried to pull over a suspicious pickup truck in the 3400 block of South 11th Street. The driver sped off and the chase ensued.
Police tailed the truck south on I-29 to the Highway 370 interchange. Wade, at the wheel of the pickup, then headed north on a frontage road alongside 29, then drove across a ditch and returned to the Interstate where, police say, he intentionally rammed two Council Bluffs Police vehicles. Officer Burleigh was driving one of those vehicles and fired at the pickup.
Two of the officers involved were treated at a local hospital. One is recovering from a concussion. Wade is expected to face two counts of Attempted Murder, Aggravated Assault on a Police Officer and Eluding - Felony. The warrant will be officially served once Wade is released from the hospital and Wilber expects additional charges to follow.
