Iowa Lawmakers Pass Controversial 'Heartbeat Bill'

Iowa lawmakers have passed a highly controversial piece of legislation that would ban most abortions in the Hawkeye State. The so-called 'heartbeat' bill would ban abortions performed after a fetal heartbeat can be detected, which is usually around the sixth week of pregnancy.

Wednesday morning, the Republican controlled Iowa Senate fast tracked the vote which came just hours after the Iowa House passed the bill.

The bill now heads to the desk of Governor Kim Reynolds for final passage. Reynolds has not said whether she'd sign the bill into law. Critics of the legislation say the bill would ban abortions before some women even know they're pregnant.

If passed by Reynolds, the bill would most likely be challenged because of debate on whether it is in violation of the U.S. Supreme Court's previous rulings on abortion.
