The American Red Cross in Omaha is sounding the alarm against house fires. From April 28 to May 13 Red Cross volunteers and community partners will install 100,000 free smoke alarms in just 16 days in communities at high risk for fires.

The Red Cross will install 800 free smoke alarms in high risk neighborhoods during the first two weeks of May. Trained volunteers will install the alarms, replace batteries in existing smoke alarms and help individuals and families develop an escape plan.

Individuals and families across the Omaha metropolitan area who are interested in receiving a free smoke alarm can sign up online anytime at GetASmokeAlarm.org or by calling the United Way 2-1-1 line.

Anyone who does not have smoke alarms installed in their home or those who have alarms that are no longer working can call to get one.
