OPS Looks To Make Big Cuts For Next School Year

Big budget cuts could be coming for the next school year for some Omaha Public Schools employees as the district faces a budget shortfall.

At Monday night's OPS board meeting, Superintendent Mark Evans said that 90 to 95 jobs could be cut, but didn't say what exact positions only that teachers jobs are safe. Some vice principals could end up back in the classroom due to the budget cuts though.

Some other options proposed in the budget cut include eliminating high school bus routes, cuts to athletic departments and many elementary summer school programs and limiting overtime. Any cuts or changes will be made at the conclusion of this school year, which will give any staff affected by the cuts a chance to find new employment. Staff who are affected by the cuts have already been notified by the district.

You can see a full list of the proposed cuts here. A final budget hearing will be held on Thursday before the board votes on May 5th.
